Examining the 4 parenting styles as highlighted in the chapter, name one character from today’s pop culture/society that depicts a specific parenting style and describe/cite 4 identifying characteristics as referenced in the text to support your selection.

The character that I have identified is Lorelai Gilmore from the Gilmore Girls.  Lorelai has an authoritative parenting style when raising her child Rory. Lorelai is very responsive to her daughter’s needs by providing individual attention to her, emotional support to her at times of need and by creating a very open and loving environment.  Lorelai also has very demanding ideals when it comes to her daughter’s educational abilities.  She excepts Rory to achieve good grades, study and go to a prominent college.  Lorelai reinforces these goals by taking out a loan for Rory to go to a private high school, staying up late to help her study and by hanging Harvard college posters on her wall as a child.   Lorelai promotes individuality and autonomy by teaching her daughter to be herself and encouraging her to do the activities that she is interested in, regardless of what her peers are interested in.  Lorelai is openly affectionate with Rory, as evidenced by providing hugs, telling her she cares for her and by providing items of comfort when she is emotional or in stress.  Lorelai communicates openly with her daughter and expects her to actively participate in conversations they have.  This creates a two way open dialogue between them, allowing Rory to call her mom whenever she is need to share something or is in crisis.
